Burning Ridge Golf Club FAQ: What You Need to Know Before You Play

Burning Ridge Golf Club doesn’t enjoy the highest of profiles in the Myrtle Beach market, but it has spent 40 years doing something just as important: delivering an affordable round that enhances golf trips.

The game has enjoyed several periods of boom and bust, and what’s architecturally en vogue has changed since the Gene Hamm design opened in 1986, but Burning Ridge’s focus on delivering a value-centric round of golf has never wavered.

In a market with 80 courses that attracts players from around the world, Burning Ridge offers a throwback round of golf that rewards good decisions and solid execution. It’s the kind of place where you won’t be wowed by visuals, but you will be tested by the shots you have to hit.

If you’re looking to dig a little deeper, here are the most frequently asked questions about Burning Ridge.

What do you mean by old school?Burning Ridge 6th
Modern architecture favors enormous fairways, often framed by sprawling waste bunkers, and greens the size of a small grocery store. That’s not the experience Burning Ridge delivers.

Burning Ridge places a premium on accuracy and rewards discipline instead of mindlessly bombing driver off every tee. The course isn’t easy (see slope/rating number below), but it’s fair and offers the opportunity to score well.

Black Tees – 6,780 yards, 73.7/134
White Tees – 6,216 yards, 71.0/130
Gold Tees – 5,725 yards, 68.4/122
Red Tees – 4,524 yards, 63.4/111 (M), 66.5/116 (W)

What defines Burning Ridge?
The course is home to the area’s smallest greens, and they are the Burning Ridge’s defining characteristic, placing a premium on quality ball striking. More specifically, this is a second shot golf course.

Hit it well and you will be rewarded with makeable putts.

The par 3s are strong
You and your buddies will be talking about the par 3s in the clubhouse after the round, especially on the back nine. The 153-yard second hole (all distances from white tees) is the most forgiving of the group, a chance to settle in early. The 175-yard fifth offers more length but gives you room to run the ball onto the green, making it a classic “hard par, easy bogey” hole.

Then the challenge ramps up.

No. 12, which plays 200 yards, including a 180-yard carry over water, is one of the most demanding one shotters at the beach, while the 164-yard 16th plays to a narrow green bordered by water on the right. It might be the course’s nerviest shot.

No matter your score, you will remember the par 3s at Burning Ridge.

Burning Ridge 4th HoleFree Advice: Don’t Get Greedy
Burning Ridge rewards patience and punishes poor decisions.

The par 4 fourth hole plays just 317 yards, but water on the right menaces every tee shot. You can’t drive the green, so play a safe shot to a comfortable number. The 11th, a 427-yard dogleg left, presents a different challenge. It’s difficult to hit the green in regulation, so chasing perfection can quickly lead to trouble. Play for position, trust your short game, and accept that par (or even bogey) is a good score here. If you stay disciplined, big numbers can be avoided.

How is the practice area?

Does the course allow walking?
